How to Measure a Corner Sofa: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Understand How Corner Sofa Dimensions Work

Corner sofa dimensions are given as two measurements: width x depth. The width is the length of the longest side; the depth is the length of the shorter side. For example, a sofa listed as 280cm x 200cm has a longest side of 280cm and a shorter return of 200cm.

Both measurements are taken in a straight line from the outermost point of one arm to the outermost point of the other — not along the curve of the L-shape.

Step 2: Measure the Width of Each Side

Measure the longest side of the sofa space from wall to wall, or from the wall to wherever the sofa will end. Then measure the shorter return side in the same way. Write both numbers down clearly, noting which is which.

If you're measuring a curved corner sofa, measure along the longest and shortest sides as you would an L-shape, then also note the radius of the curve — curved sofas sit slightly further from the wall at the centre point and need a little extra clearance.

Step 3: Measure Your Room

Measure the full length and width of your room. Note the position of windows, radiators, plug sockets, and doors, as all of these affect where the sofa can realistically sit.

Then take these specific readings:

1. Wall to wall along each side of the sofa's planned position
2. Distance from the sofa to any opposing furniture — aim for at least 45cm of clearance for comfortable movement
3. Distance from the sofa to any doorways — enough space for doors to open freely without catching the sofa

Step 4: Check All Access Points

Measure every point the sofa needs to pass through on delivery day — not just the living room. Check:

1. Front door or entrance width — measure the narrowest point including the frame
2. Hallway width — note any tight turns or bends
3. Staircase width and ceiling height — for upper-floor deliveries, measure straight runs and any landings separately
4. Internal doorway width — the doorway into your living room, including the frame

Allow at least 10–15cm of clearance on each side when carrying a sofa section through a doorway.
